The most powerful prayer isn’t defined by your words, but by the level of consciousness from which you speak them. Have you ever noticed how sometimes your prayers feel empty, while other times they seem to resonate with profound connection? The difference isn’t in what you’re asking for—it’s in where you’re asking from. Throughout human history, shamanic traditions have recognized that our prayers emerge from distinct levels of consciousness. These seven levels of prayer, each representing a unique relationship with the divine, create a powerful framework for understanding spiritual communication. This week, let me guide you through this ancient wisdom that has the power to transform not just how you pray, but who you become through prayer. The Seven Levels of Prayer: Ancient Shamanic WisdomI’ve been deeply immersed in Jose Luis Stevens‘ revolutionary book, “How to Pray the Shaman’s Way,” which reveals ancient wisdom about prayer that few spiritual teachers discuss. This exploration of the seven levels of prayer has dramatically shifted my understanding of what prayer actually is. What Stevens reveals is that prayer operates on a spectrum—from fear-based survival pleas to the highest state of divine union. Each level of prayer represents a different relationship with the cosmos and reflects our spiritual development. As you recognize these levels in your own practice, you’ll begin to see why some prayers seem to work while others fall flat. Let’s explore each of the seven levels of prayer, and I invite you to honestly assess where your own prayers typically originate. Level 1: The Smash-and-Grab Prayer”Dear God, kill my enemies; make me strong over them.” The first of the seven levels of prayer emerges from our most primal instinct: survival. While it may seem harsh, we’ve all experienced moments when we felt threatened and desperately needed protection. This level is rooted in the ancient limbic brain—our fear center—where the world appears divided into predators and prey. The prayer seeks dominance over perceived enemies, whether people, circumstances, or even aspects of ourselves we wish to conquer. Ask yourself: Have you ever silently wished harm on someone who hurt you? That’s Level 1 prayer speaking through you. It’s not “wrong”—it’s simply the most primitive form of spiritual reaching, driven by fear rather than love. Remember, acknowledging these impulses is part of spiritual growth. We can’t transcend what we don’t first recognize within ourselves. Level 2: The Guilty Plea Prayer”Dear God, please don’t punish me! I know I’ve been bad! Save me. Have mercy on me!” Have you ever caught yourself bargaining with the divine after making a mistake? “I’ll never do it again if you just get me out of this mess!” Level 2 prayer emerges from guilt and shame. It views God as the cosmic judge—stern, punitive, keeping score. It’s the spiritual equivalent of a child hiding after breaking a vase, desperate to avoid punishment. This prayer pattern often arises from religious upbringings where divine love was portrayed as conditional. The underlying belief is that you must grovel to be worthy of grace. The research shows this perspective is remarkably common—studies on religious psychology reveal that many people relate to the divine primarily through fear of punishment. Yet this view severely limits your spiritual connection. Try this: The next time you feel the impulse to beg for forgiveness, pause and ask yourself what you’re actually afraid of. Is it divine punishment, or your own unwillingness to forgive yourself? Level 3: The Materialistic Mantra”Dear God, make me rich and successful! Give me, give me, give me!” The third in our seven levels of prayer treats the divine as a cosmic vending machine, existing primarily to fulfill your material desires. You might recognize this approach in many modern manifestation teachings that focus exclusively on attracting wealth, relationships, or success. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with desiring abundance, Level 3 prayer becomes problematic when material acquisition is divorced from deeper purpose. The truth is, many spiritual traditions around the world warn against this approach. From Buddhism’s teachings on attachment to Jesus’s caution about gaining the world but losing your soul, wisdom traditions consistently point to the limitations of material-focused spirituality. In my experience coaching thousands of heart-centered leaders, those who remain stuck at Level 3 often achieve external success while feeling spiritually hollow. They get what they asked for, only to discover it wasn’t what they truly needed. Let that sink in. Level 4: The Help Me, Help Them Prayer”Dear God, life is so hard! Help me, give me strength, help my loved ones too. I know you can help me. I am so confused! I know you are listening, but why don’t you help me, damn it?” Here we begin to see a significant shift. Level 4 prayer expands beyond self-interest to include concern for others. This represents real spiritual evolution. At this level, you recognize your limitations and surrender to something greater. You acknowledge that you can’t control everything and need assistance. This vulnerability marks an important transition in spiritual development. What makes Level 4 distinct is its emotional honesty. You’re no longer just performing religious rituals or making demands—you’re expressing authentic need. There’s often frustration and confusion mixed with hope, creating a prayer that’s messy but genuine. This is where many of us find ourselves during life’s most challenging moments: relationship breakdowns, health crises, career setbacks, or periods of intense uncertainty. We’re willing to admit we need help, and that admission itself is powerful. Ask yourself: When was the last time you prayed from a place of genuine vulnerability rather than polite spiritual performance?
Level 5: The Gratitude Gala”Dear God, thank you for providing for me. I love you! You are wonderful to me!” The fifth of the seven levels of prayer marks a revolutionary shift in consciousness. Rather than asking for something, you’re acknowledging what you already have. The science behind gratitude is compelling. Research shows that regular gratitude practices literally rewire your neural pathways, increasing happiness and resilience while reducing stress hormones. But the spiritual benefits go even deeper. When you pray with gratitude, you’re recognizing the abundance that already exists in your life. This perspective shift changes everything. Instead of approaching the divine as a needy child, you engage as an appreciative partner in co-creation. In my experience, Level 5 prayer creates a profound resonance between your heart and divine consciousness. You’re no longer trying to change God’s mind about your circumstances; you’re changing your mind about God’s presence in your life. Try this: Before asking for anything in prayer, spend time genuinely thanking the divine for three specific gifts in your life—particularly ones you normally take for granted. Notice how this practice shifts your energy and opens your heart. Level 6: The Devoted Disciple Dance”Dear God, thank you for making me in your image and likeness. Allow me to know you more and more. I am your servant. May your Will be aligned with my will. Make me a channel for your love.” At Level 6, prayer transforms from something you do to something you are. This level represents true surrender—not the defeated kind, but the liberating recognition that you are an instrument of something greater than yourself. The prayer shifts from “my will be done” to “thy will be done.” Ancient wisdom traditions across cultures share this understanding. The Bhagavad Gita speaks of surrendered action. The Tao Te Ching describes the power of yielding. Christian mystics call it “divine union.” The language differs, but the experience is remarkably similar—a profound letting go that paradoxically empowers. When you pray from Level 6, you’re no longer trying to bend the universe to your desires. Instead, you’re aligning yourself with the deeper currents of possibility flowing through your life. You become less concerned with specific outcomes and more focused on serving as a channel for divine love. This shift isn’t about becoming passive. Rather, it’s about recognizing that your highest purpose emerges when you align with a wisdom greater than your ego’s limited perspective. Here’s why this matters: When you surrender your agenda, you often receive exactly what you need—which may be different from what you thought you wanted. Level 7: The Cosmic Union Prayer“Dear God, I am Thou, and Thou art me. You and I are one. I am peace. I am who I am.” Level 7 represents the pinnacle of prayer consciousness—a state where the distinction between you and the divine dissolves completely. This isn’t theoretical theology; it’s a lived experience reported by mystics across traditions. Teresa of Ávila described it as “spiritual marriage.” In Buddhism, it’s called “non-dual awareness.” Indigenous traditions speak of becoming one with Great Spirit. At this level, prayer isn’t something you do—it’s something you become. The separation between prayer and life vanishes. Every breath, every action, every moment becomes prayer because you recognize yourself as an expression of the divine. The profound paradox of Level 7 is that once you fully realize your oneness with God, traditional prayer becomes unnecessary. There’s no “you” asking and no separate “God” answering. There’s just the unified field of consciousness experiencing itself through your unique perspective. Few of us live permanently at Level 7, but glimpses of this state can transform our understanding of what prayer actually is. These moments of unity consciousness reveal that what we’re seeking has been present all along. The Ultimate Truth About PrayerIn my journey with these teachings, I’ve discovered something life-changing about the nature of prayer itself. The progression through these seven levels reveals a profound shift in purpose that few spiritual teachers discuss. At the lower levels (1-3), we’re essentially asking God or the Divine to change our external circumstances. We pray for protection from enemies, forgiveness of sins, or material abundance. The underlying belief is that prayer is a tool to manipulate reality from the outside in. But as we ascend to higher levels (5-7), something remarkable happens: prayer becomes less about changing our circumstances and more about changing ourselves. This is the great reversal in spiritual understanding. When we pray from gratitude, surrender, and unity, we’re no longer attempting to bend the universe to our will. Instead, we’re allowing ourselves to be transformed by the very qualities of the Divine we seek to connect with. We become unified with the aspects of God we wish to experience—peace, love, abundance, or wisdom. This transformation creates a fundamental shift in perception. And as Wayne Dyer so brilliantly observed, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Let that sink in. The miraculous power of higher-level prayer isn’t that it convinces God to rearrange the universe for your benefit. Its true power is that it transforms your consciousness until you perceive and experience the world differently. From this elevated awareness, solutions appear that were previously invisible, relationships heal in ways you couldn’t imagine, and possibilities emerge that seemed impossible from your former perspective. Final ThoughtsThe beauty of this prayer framework is that it honors wherever you find yourself. Having a Level 1 survival prayer during a crisis is perfectly normal. Experiencing gratitude in Level 5 after receiving unexpected blessings is natural. The key isn’t judging your prayers but becoming conscious of their source. As you develop this awareness, you’ll likely notice that prayers from higher levels tend to create more lasting peace and alignment in your life. When I pray from gratitude, surrender, or unity, I experience a profound shift in my being—a coming home to my authentic self that transcends specific outcomes. Our prayers naturally evolve as our consciousness develops. We don’t need to force ourselves to pray “correctly”—we simply need to honestly recognize where we are and allow our awareness to expand. The journey through these seven levels isn’t linear; we move between them depending on our circumstances and inner state. What matters most is increasing our awareness of where our prayers originate. With this awareness comes choice, and with choice comes the opportunity for transformation. Ask yourself: Where are most of your prayers coming from? What would it feel like to consciously shift to the next level in your spiritual practice? Remember, what you pray for matters far less than where you pray from. Your state of consciousness is the true determining factor in your prayer’s power. And as you elevate your consciousness through these seven levels, you’ll discover that prayer isn’t just something you do—it’s something you become. From my heart to yours, —Gabriel PS. THE PARADOX OF LOVE: The more you try to get others to love you, the more unloved you feel. Have you ever noticed how the people who seem most desperate for love often struggle the most to find it? This isn’t a coincidence—it’s a paradox that’s woven into the fabric of human connection. This paradox shows up everywhere. When you carefully craft a perfect image to appear lovable, you secretly feel more unworthy beneath the mask. When you exhaust yourself pleasing others hoping they’ll validate...
Have you ever found yourself completely drained after helping someone? Maybe you’ve spent hours counseling a friend through a crisis only to feel hollow afterward. Or perhaps you’ve noticed how your desire to ease others’ suffering sometimes leaves you unable to function in your own life. This isn’t just ordinary fatigue. What you’re experiencing might be what I’ve come to call “suicidal empathy” – a pattern where our natural compassion becomes self-destructive. This term has recently gained...
Hello Reader, In last week’s article, I challenged the common wisdom that we should “find our passion” before taking meaningful action. The response was overwhelming—many of you recognized how waiting for passion had kept you stuck for years. You embraced the truth that purpose-guided effort actually creates passion, not the other way around. Yet something curious happened. While many of you intellectually accepted this insight, you still found yourselves frozen in place. “I understand I need...
