7 Spiritual Lessons From the First Millennial Saint

Dear Reader,

Recently, I came across a story that deeply moved me and challenged my assumptions about spirituality in our modern world. It’s about a teenager who loved pizza and video games, coded websites in his spare time, and is about to become the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint.

This is the story of Carlo Acutis, who wore jeans and Nike sneakers while creating a digital catalog of religious miracles before succumbing to leukemia at age 15. His life wasn’t extraordinary because he achieved perfection—it was extraordinary because of his authentic presence and the purity of his heart. As the first millennial saint, Carlo’s example offers powerful spiritual lessons that resonate far beyond church walls. In this week's article, I share:

  • Why “everyone is born as an original, but many die as photocopies”
  • How technology can become a vehicle for meaning rather than distraction
  • A powerful approach to suffering that transforms pain into compassion
  • Simple practices to bring extraordinary presence to your everyday moments

What strikes me most about this remarkable teen's life isn't perfection, but presence—his ability to fully inhabit ordinary experiences with extraordinary authenticity. Whether you're navigating challenging relationships, seeking greater meaning in your work, or simply wanting to live more wholeheartedly, these seven spiritual lessons offer practical wisdom for our modern lives.

Something I learned recently…

Did you know that more cardiac deaths occur in the U.S. on December 25 than on any other day of the year, followed by December 26 and January 1? According to Dr. Johanna Contreras, this is because of the extra emotional pressure we put on ourselves during the holiday seasons, and being so busy, most people ignore important warning signs of a heart attack or stroke. If you're interested in reading the research study, and Dr. Contrera's remarks, you can read the full article here.

Hello Reader, Have you ever noticed how the question “Are you living up to your true potential?” can fill your chest with immediate anxiety? It’s meant to inspire, but instead, it often paralyzes. Most of us carry an undercurrent of anxiety about whether we’re doing enough, being enough, or living up to our potential. This nagging doubt follows us through major decisions and quiet moments alike. It shows up when you speak up in meetings, when you consider changing careers at 45, or as you...

Hello Reader, For thousands of years, across spiritual traditions worldwide, the human heart has been recognized as far more than a physical organ. It’s been revered as a sacred center of divine consciousness—a place where our humanity meets the divine, where wisdom beyond the mind can be accessed, and where our deepest transformation begins. Yet in our modern approach to meditation, this profound dimension of the heart is often overlooked or forgotten, leaving many spiritual seekers with a...

Hello Reader, Have you ever noticed how your phone has become less of a tool and more of an extension of your body? The subtle weight in your pocket that you check for instinctively. The screen that lights up your face more often than the sun some days. I certainly had—and it troubled me. Not because technology is inherently problematic, but because I sensed something valuable was being displaced in the constant digital exchange. Connection. Presence. The quiet space where creativity and...
